"If I could choose again, I'd be a fisherman," says Dave Wang
GUANGZHOU: Taiwan singer Dave Wang lashed out at the Hong Kong entertainment industry once more, during a press conference on Saturday for his Guangzhou concert, reported Chinese media.
"The entertainment industry has too much darkness and ugliness. I have never been able to get used to this environment.
"If I could choose again, I'd be a fisherman, because I love the sea," said Wang, who had been the subject of all sorts of gossip in recent years, with some tabloid articles claiming he is a gambler and an eccentric.
Wang also claimed that celebrities often colluded with the media to create buzz about them, recounting how he was once approached by a tabloid reporter who shadowed him for a year, and was asked to go out with a girl, just so the reporter could photograph them together for a story.
"Do you think Hong Kong reporters are so capable that they can secretly snap celebrities all day?
"Nowadays, the media and the celebrities collude to create sensational news. If you want to survive, you have to use all necessary means," said Wang.
"I can't accept this kind of entertainment industry."
The singer, who is best known for his hits like "A Game A Dream" and "A Special Love for a Special You", conceded that this was one of the things that make him want to quit showbiz.
Wang expressed that he intends to leave behind a successor and is now actively looking for one.
He said his successor must be someone "with a good voice, is committed to music, and isn't seeking fame or fortune" - but pointed out that those who have taken part in televised talent searches need not apply.
"I wouldn't pick someone who has appeared in these shows because most of them dream of becoming big stars and are too focused on the payoff," explained Wang.
"Those who are truly charismatic will not join these contests. Perhaps I'll find someone on the street."
